Appointment of Dr. Yaşar Akgün as Acting President to the ECO Bank

Dr. Yaşar Akgün has been appointed as “Acting President” of the ECO Bank by the Governors of the three founding countries which are the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Republic of Turkey. Following the appointment to his new position, Mr. Akgün took office at the Headquarters of the Bank in İstanbul, as of June 6, 2011.

 

Before his appointment as Acting President, Dr. Yaşar Akgün had been the Chairman of the Board of Treasury Controllers and Head of Audit Authority for EU Funds at the Turkish Treasury, since October 2007.  

 

Dr. Yaşar Akgün graduated from Turkey’s influential Faculty of Political Sciences, Ankara University in 1978. He started his career as Treasury Controller at the Turkish Treasury. Parallel to his bureaucratic engagements he realized academic studies by obtaining his M.A. degree on monetary economics from Northeastern University, (Boston, USA, 1985), his PhD degree on currency convertibility from İstanbul University (1991) and his Associate Professor of Economic Policy title from the Inter-Universities Board of Turkey (1996).

 

As a diplomatic post, Mr. Akgün served as Economic Counsellor to the Ambassador, Turkish Embassy, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 1996 to 1999. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors at Telsim AŞ (currently Vodafone Turkey) responsible for financial management and external relations from February 2004 to May 2006.
